Etymology: Gymnoxenisthmus: Name from Greek 'gymnos' meaning bare or naked, and the gobioid genus Xenisthmus; refers to the absence of scales on the body.;  tigrellus: Name a Latin word meaning a little tiger; referring to the orange bars on the body (selected by school children at the Australian Museum Science Festival Expo in August 2013)..

Short description Morfología | Morfometría

Espinas dorsales (total): 6; Radios blandos dorsales (total): 13; Espinas anales 1; Radios blandos anales: 12; Vértebra: 26. This species is distinguished by the following set of characters: no head pores; no scales; D1 V; dorsal- and anal-fin rays branched and at least some pectoral-fin rays are branched; pelvic fin with a spine and five unbranched rays (Ref. 94949).

Collected from a narrow reef flat, the sandy slope with patches of corals and a rocky wall of about 3 m with small caves and shelters, and the slope began at depths of 8-10 m. The holotype was captured on sand at the base of coral at a depth of 8 meters (Ref. 94949).
