Etymology: Iniistius: Latin, in = in + Greek, istion = sail;  bakunawa: Species epithet named after 'Bakunawa', a serpentine figure in Visayan mythology believed to have caused an eclipse by devouring the moon (Ref. 129132).

Kurzbeschreibung Morphologie | Morphometrie

This species can be distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: 7 horizontal rows of scales on cheek; GR: 4-6 + 8-11 = 12-17; gill rakers short, bearing teeth; and tubed lateral line scales 23-26; 2 scales dorsoanteriorly on opercle. Colouration: Head and body pale yellowish to jade green with a large black and white concentric ellipsoid ocellus on the posteriormost edge of its dorsal fin.
