Etymology: Characidium: Diminutive of Charax, -akos = a fish without identification (Ref. 45335);  onca: Name from Portuguese 'onca', referring to the jaguar Panthera onca (Linnaeus), alluding to the black spots in a bright gold-yellow body; noun in apposition (Ref. 123789).

Description synthétique Morphologie | Morphométrie

Rayons mous dorsaux (Total): 8-10; Rayons mous anaux: 6; Vertèbres: 35 - 36. This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following characters: presence of small dots on the side of the body, arranged in two or three distinct longitudinal lines; short pectoral fin, not reaching the vertical that passes through the origin of the dorsal fin; absence of adipose fin and bars; scaled isthmus; absence of blotches on dorsum; presence of longitudinal gold stripe; and mouth small, terminal. Colouration: yellow to brownish with dorsum darker and whitish belly, with gold tint on opercle, eye and parts of the head (123789).
