This species is distinguished by the following set of characters: presence or a pungent opercular spine; maxillary mustache-like process blunt; ribs on the last abdominal vertebra; two round nub-like structures present on symphysis of lower jaw; tongue narrow and sword-like, no teeth; gill rakers 7-9 + 20-21 = 28-30; vertebrae 11 + 14; total pored lateral-line scales 49-54 (hypural end 45-50 + caudal fin 4-5); scales below lateral line 9-10; D VII-I,9; pectoral-fin rays 16-17; pyloric caeca 7; head length 31.9-34.6 % SL; body depth 20.5-22.6 % SL; lower-jaw length 13.5-14.5 % SL; second dorsal-fin spine length 12.7-14.7 % SL; and second anal-fin spine length 12.7-15.5 % SL (Ref. 91119).
