Etymology: Notopogon: Greek, noton = back + Greek, pogon = beard (Ref. 45335).
Environment: milieu / climate zone / depth range / distribution range
Ecologia
marinhas batidemersal; intervalo de profundidade 150 - 580 m (Ref. 9563). Deep-water
Southeast Pacific and Southwest Atlantic: Southwest Pacific: Southeast Pacific: Juan Fernández Is, Nazca Ridge and Sala-y-Gomez, Chile (Ref. 50546). Southwest Atlantic: From Southern Brazil to northern Argentina (Ref. 42513). Previous reports from New South Wales and Victoria (Australia) and New Zealand are misidentifications for Notopogon xenosoma Regan, 1914 (Ref. 42513).
Tamanho / Peso / Idade
Maturity: Lm ?  range ? - ? cm
Max length : 18.0 cm TL macho/indeterminado; (Ref. 9563)
Espinhos dorsais (total): 6; Raios dorsais moles (total): 17; Espinhos anais 0; Raios anais moles: 18. Six oblique purplish-blue bands on each side of body, ground color of body silvery white. Gill cover and subocular region silvery. Upper parts of head and snout dark blue. Fins semitransparent (Ref. 27363).
Occurs on the continental shelf and slope. Identification of Notopogon species are difficult because body shape and development change with age and perhaps sex (Ref. 9563).
