Eastern Atlantic: Morocco to Senegal and from Gabon to Angola. Western Atlantic: USA to about 14°N, and from Brazil to Argentina. Northwest Atlantic: Canada (Ref. 5951). Indian Ocean: 8°S to 34°S. Southwest Pacific: off New Zealand. Southeast Pacific: northern section of the California Current region (Ref. 31442) and off Chile. Reported from Hawaii (Ref. 583) and Japan (Ref. 559).

পৃষ্ঠীয় কাঁটা (মোট ): 0; পৃষ্ঠীয় নরম পাখনা দন্ড (মোট ): 9-11; পায়ূ কাঁটা 0; পায়ূর নরম পাখনা্তুন্ড: 16 - 19; কশেরুকা : 35 - 40. Branchiostegal rays: 7-8 (Ref. 31442).

High-oceanic, epipelagic to mesopelagic, at 375-650 m by day (most common at 500 m); nycto-epipelagic at surface and down to 200 m (Ref. 4775). Neustonic at 0-200 m at night (Ref. 58302). Oviparous, with planktonic eggs and larvae (Ref. 31442).
