Recorded Western Ghats (Ref. 40976); Mondai stream and Gundalika River, Maharashtra (Ref. 43634, 44323); Chittar River basin, Orissa and Moyar River, Tamil Nadu (Ref. 44312, 44323); Hemavathy and Yagachi Rivers, Karnataka (Ref. 44324) and Chilka Lake (Ref. 29108). Present in Nainital, Bhimtal and Naukuchiatal lakes (Ref. 89721), also in Adma and Jayanti rivers (Ref. 89719). Recorded as having been or being farmed in rice fields (Ref. 119549), .Also Ref. 4832, 40976, 43640, 45204, 45255, 87807.

Status of threat: Low risk in Western Ghats (Ref. 50614).
