Known from Black Sea, Sea of Marmara, Aegean Sea and its watersheds, European Black Sea watersheds, European Mediterranean Sea watersheds, Anatolian Black Sea watersheds and Western Anatolian lake watersheds. Threatened due to fishing, habitat loss, eutrophication/pollution and construction of weirs/dams in rivers. In Appendix III of the Bern Convention (protected fauna). Listed on Annexes II and V of the EU Habitats Directive (Ref. 58342).

Status of threat: Extinct (Ref. 58342).
