Known from Atlantic coastal drainages from Hudson through Potomac River drainage in Virginia, USA; Great Lakes (except Lake Superior), Hudson Bay (Red River) and Mississippi River basins from New York to North Dakota and south to Alabama and eastern Oklahoma; isolated populations in Ozarks (Ref. 86798).

Chesapeake Bay: found in large tributaries, occasionally collected in waters with salinities greater than 5% but is typically found in lakes and in large creeks and rivers (Ref. 27549).
