Type locality of neotype of Clupea fallax: 'Seine à Rouen' (Ref. 457; neotype by Ref. 104885). Known from all rivers along the Atlantic coast (Ref. 2163, 40476), including Gironde estuary (Ref. 40476, 51442), Loire (Ref. 40476), Seine (Ref. 40476), Adour (Ref. 40476), and smaller coastal rivers of the English Channel - Atlantic littoral, notably Charente (Ref. 40476). Becoming rare in Rhine, Rhône and Seine. Still present in downstream waters of Aude and Rhône, probably until Avignon (Ref. 40476). Also Ref. 12255.

In "Annexe III de la convention de Berne" and "Annexes II et V de la Directive Habitats-Faune-Flore" (Ref. 40476). Game fishing is in full rise (Ref. 51442).

Status of threat: vulnerable (Ref. 11941, 30578, 74334).
