Occurs in Western Ghats from South Canara to Kerala and Madhya Pradesh (Ref. 45255). This fish is not found today in South Canara and Travancore (Ref. 41236). Contributes a minor fishery in South Karnataka (Ref. 4832). Also Ref. 43641, 44148.

Status of threat: endangered (Ref. 41236), specifically in Western Ghats (Ref. 50614).
