Once widely distributed but now reduced to cooler upper reaches of Murray-Darling system due to commercial and game fishing. Introduced in the Wannon, Barwon, Yarra Rivers (Victoria) and Nepean and Shoalhaven Rivers (N.S.W.) (Ref. 7300). Adversely affected by Salmo trutta and Perca fluviatilis (Ref. 48787). Numbers have decreased in recent decades due to overfishing, siltation and a viral disease carried by introduced Redfin perch (Ref. 44894). Endangered (Ref. 57487).
