Type locality, ZIN 54263 (holotype of Gymnothorax emmae, 26.8 cm TL, female with ripe eggs). Known from the Van Phong Bay in the north to Phan Thiet in the south. It is the most common species of morays on soft grounds at the coast of central Vietnam, however by frequency of occurrence, it is second only to G. minor where both are frequent in trawl catches all year round (Ref. 85566).
