Known from the upper Tennessee River drainage (Holston, Clinch and Powell Rivers) in Tennessee and Virginia (Ref. 86798). Found extremely rare in small range (Ref. 86798). Also Ref. 5723, 10294.

Status of threat: endangered; status declined since 1989. Criteria: 1,5 (http://fisc.er.usgs.gov/afs/) (Ref. 81264).
