Paddlefish was imported from the US as eyed eggs or larvae, in the period 1992-2000 (up to 20000 specimens/year), under a government financed research project. Research was conducted in the Fish Culture Research Station in Nucet (south of Romania). First females matured in 2001 and artificial spawning was successfully attempted in 2002. Since then, the fish has been spread in several aquaculture farms in Romania and it is raised for meat and caviar. Artificial spawning is made every year, and there are signs that the paddlefish will become a common aquaculture species. Exports of eyed eggs or larvae/fingerlings to Hungary, Bulgaria and Moldova have been done (Christian Stoicescu, pers. comm., 2006).
