Cold water hill stream inhabitant; occurs in the Gandaki, Karnali, Kosi and Narayani zones at altitudes of 76-784 m. Also found in Bagmati, Pokhara lakes (Ref. 40948), Sunkoshi, Arun, Tamur and Trisuli rivers (Ref. 57735). Prefers small streams and creeks (Ref. 12045). Marketed smoked at the price of 290-300 Rs/kg at the Kathmandu market. Preserved in temple ponds and worshipped as a Fish Goddess (Ref. 12045). Considered vulnerable (Ref. 12044).
