Type locality, Honshu, Lake Biwa, ZUMT 57520 (holotype of Chaenogobius isaza, 4.93 cm SL) (Ref. 81467). Endemic to Lake Biwa. Introduced to Lakes Kasumigaura and Sagami, but breeding has not been ascertained. Status of threat in the 2005 Red Data Book of Shiga Prefecture : danger increasing (Ref. 79825).

Status of threat: Critically endangered (Ref. 94887).
