Type locality of Plectranthias mcgroutheri North West Shelf, 190 km northwest of Port Hedland. Known only from specimens trawled from Western Australia: seven in 200–202 m, from 190 km northwest of Port Hedland; one in 184-187 m, 190 km west of Broome; and, six in 166 m, west of Exmouth Gulf (Ref. 123579).
