Known from northern (where abundant) and central (where less abundant) New Zealand from from North Cape, Bay of Plenty, Challenger Plateau, eastern Chatham Rise, and the west coast of South Island at depths of 330-928 m. Museum: Bay of Plenty, NMNZ P.7725. Off Northland, NMNZ P.21740. Off North Cape, NMNZ P.22983. Northwest coast of South Island, NMNZ P.22985. In northern waters, it is caught together with Caelorinchus bollonsi, C. parvifasciatus, C. fasciatus, and C. cookianus. Also Ref. 75154.
