Found in lake Rara and in the lower reaches of Langtang khola, at altitude of 3,400 m. Also occurs in headwater streams of Koshi, Karnali, Mahakali, Himalayan lakes (Ref. 57735) and Kali Gandaki (Ref. 40948). Prefers sandy and gravel-bottomed rivers. Preserved in temple ponds and worshipped as a Fish Goddess. Considered threatened (Ref. 12045).
