Type locality, about 1.5 km west of Poka, Ambon Bay, Molucca Islands, 20-24 m, BPBM 32322 (holotype of Vanderhorstia auronotata, 2.83 cm SL, female). The type specimen was collected using rotenone on sloping silty sand bottom, by J. Randall, on 2 October 1987 (Ref. 75899).
