Appears to be restricted to the region around Islas Juan Fernández and around the Valaparaíso coast (Ref. 9068). Museum: near Más a Tierra, Islas Juan Fernández, SIO 65-643 (holotype, 37.5 cm TL, juvenile female) (Ref. 26665).

Etymology: Eptatretus:hepta (Gr.), seven; tretos (Gr.), perforated (i.e., with holes), referring to seven gill apertures on what would later be described as Homea banksii (=E. cirrhatus) [range within genus is 6-14 pairs of gill apertures].
