Comments: Distributed around southern Australia from southern Queensland to Exmouth Gulf in Western Australia, although they are most abundant in New South Wales waters (Ref. 6390). Reported from Lord Howe Island (Ref. 75154). Commercial fishery: Yellowtail are a traditional bait for recreational and commercial fishers (e.g. as live and dead bait for tuna). Fish put straight onto ice slurry are used for human consumption. Yellowtail are caught with handlines and seine nets, and are often associated with schools of pilchards. Yellowtail are mainly caught in New South Wales (139 t in 1989-90), with small catches from Western Australia (46 t). There is potential for an export market for yellowtail for both human consumption and bait in tuna longline fisheries. Also Ref. 9258.
