Occurs in southern Australia, from the western sector of the Great Australian Bight to off Tasmania and Victoria (Ref. 6871). Sometimes enters shallow bays in Tasmania (Ref. 6871). Museum: Tasmania or South Australia, BMNH 1869.2.24.2 (Syntype). Caught in small quantities (Ref. 6871). Also Ref. 7300.

Etymology: Pristiophorus:pristio-, presumably derived from prio (Gr.), to saw, but treated here as a noun (a saw); phorus, from phoreus (Gr.), bearer or carrier, referring to saw-like snout (note also that pristis is Greek for sawfish).
