Type locality, Queensland, Escape Reef, outer reef, AMS I.22583-004 (holotype of Opistognathus stigmosus, 7.05 cm SL, male). Known only from the Great Barrier Reef (Escape Reef) and the Coral Sea Plateau (Lihou Reef), 20-29 m (Ref. 76827). Also Ref. 75154.
