Type locality, Western Australia, north of Point Hedland, NTM S.11822-001 (holotype of Eptatretus alastairi, 43.0 cm TL). Collected from Western Australia, from off Collier Bay (near Sandy Islet) to off Gantheaume Bay, 380-550 m; one specimen from Queensland, off Capricorn Group, at 500 m (Ref. 85052).

Etymology: Eptatretus:hepta (Gr.), seven; tretos (Gr.), perforated (i.e., with holes), referring to seven gill apertures on what would later be described as Homea banksii (=E. cirrhatus) [range within genus is 6-14 pairs of gill apertures].
