Type locality, east of Newcastle, New South Wales, CSIRO H 3714-01 (holotype of Cephaloscyllium variegatum, 68.3 cm TL, adult male). Known off eastern Australia from off Rockingham Bay, Queensland (18°08′ S, 147°09′ E), south to Tathra, New South Wales (36°31′ S, 150°19′ E), on the outer continental shelf and upper slope, 114-606 m. (Ref. 76948).

Etymology: Cephaloscyllium:cephalus, from kephale (Gr.), head, referring to its very broad and depressed head; skylion, Greek for dogfish or small shark.
