Common throughout the plains; abundant in muddy streams up to an altitude of 600 m in Terai and Duars of North Bengal; fairly common in the Chilka lake (Orissa) (Ref. 4833); Maharashtra (Ref. 43634); Bhavani River, Tamil Nadu; Wynaad, Kerala (Ref. 44148); Tripura (Ref. 97593). Present in Bhimtal and Naukuchiatal lakes (Ref. 89721), Tungabhadra river, Tambraparani river system, Cauveri and Chinnar river systems, Chimmony WLS and Nilgiri Biosphere reserve (Ref. 92228). Commonly used as food by the locals in Tirunelveli district (Ref. 44151). Recorded as having been or being farmed in rice fields (Ref. 119549). Also Ref. 29108, 4854, 41236, 43640, 45255.
