Pectoral fin and ventral margin of tail usually pigmented (both never unpigmented in same specimen); caudal pigment usually present through flexion stage; body mostly pigmented in pelagic juvenile stage; frontal spines prominent by about 8 mm; pectoral fins usually 17; 5-7 preanal myomeres (preflexion stage), 19-20 total myomeres. Pigmentation: Yolk-sac through postflexion: under hindbrain; forming on nape at about 2.3 mm; spreading over brain and caudad after 3.5-4 mm; heavy on dorsal, dorsolateral, and anterior surfaces of gut; few along ventral margin of posterior half of tail, mostly internal after about 4 mm; usually few on inner and outer surfaces of pectoral fin bases; forming along pectoral fin rays after about 4 mm; distally on pelvic fin and on dorsal spines. Pelagic juvenile: body nearly completely pigmented except little on jaws and snout before about 26 mm, none on end of caudal peduncle. Sequence of fin development: first dorsal, pelvics, caudal, second dorsal and anal and pectorals. |
