After Duhamel du Monceau (1780) Part II, Sect. III, Plate XVI, fig. 4 (Grosse sardine), where the name was only in French. Recognised to be almost the same except size to Clupea pilchardus Bloch, 1795 by Cuvier himself.

Latin, clupea = sardine, derived from Clupeus = shield; doubtless a reference to the scales covering the body of the fish + Greek, odous = teeth (Ref. 45335).
