Hemichromis guttatus was considered as a junior synonym of H. bimaculatus by Boulenger (1907, 1915) and Pellegrin (1904), but was revalidated by Loiselle (1979, Ref. 43352).
  Etymology of generic noun
Greek, hemis = half + Greek, chromis = a fish, perhaps a perch (Ref. 45335).
  Etymology of specific epithet
From the Latin guttatus, meaning 'speckled', apparently referring to the pattern of black dots in the cheek and opercular region of the type material (Ref. 43352).
