A misnomer given by Rafinesque to shriveled specimens, with the meaning of "back keel"; from Greek, noton = back (Ref. 45335).

Name from Latin 'ampla' meaning enlarged and 'mala' for jaw; referring to the longjaw and expanded infraorbital and preoperculomandibular canals of the species; noun in apposition.
