Family:  Cyprinidae (Minnows or carps), subfamily: Labeoninae
Max. size:  75 cm TL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  benthopelagic; freshwater; pH range: 8, potamodromous
Distribution:  Asia: Pakistan, India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Myanmar and China; probably Sri Lanka (Ref. 4832). Also reported from Iran (Ref. 39702), Afghanistan (Ref. 41034) and Bhutan (Ref. 40882).
Diagnosis:   
Biology:  Adults inhabit torrential hill-streams in shallow waters (Ref. 4832). They migrate to warmer regions of lakes and streams during winter (Ref. 40974). Used commonly by anglers as bait for Raiamas bola and Tor putitora. Herbivorous (Refs. 40948, 56237). Highly esteemed as food.

Country info:  Found all along the Himalaya, Arunachal Pradesh (Ref. 4832) and West Bengal (Ref. 45255), including Kashmir, Chota-Nagpur, Satpura-Vindhya ranges, Deccan and south as far as the Cauvery (Ref. 41236). Also found in Kedar Valley (Ref. 37082) and Siwalik (Ref. 40971). Present in Nainital Lake (Ref. 89721), Buxa, Adma and Jayanti rivers (Ref. 89719). Vulnerable (Ref. 41236). Brahmaputra River basin of India (Ref. 72360). Also Ref. 43637.
