Remarks 'eel' from Middle English, 'ele', from Old English 'ael' and akin to Old High German, 'ãl' (Ref. 11978); 'catfish', i.e., fish that resembles a cat, mainly because of the long tactile barbels around the mouth (Ref. 11978).
