Etymology: Chiasmodon: Name from the Greek 'chiasmos' which means diagonally arranged, and 'odous' for tooth or teeth.;  asper: Name from Latin 'asper' for asperous, rough; referring to its rough skin due to the presence of minute prickles in the juveniles and adults.
