Africa: widely distributed in West Africa: upper Niger (Guinea), upper Senegal (Mali), upper Gambia River (Senegal), Konkouré, Great Scarcies/Kolenté (Guinea), Little Scarcies, Rokel, Pampana (Sierra Leone)(Ref. 57223), Cess/Nipoué, Cavally, Sassandra (Ivory Coast)(Ref. 272, 57223), Pra (Ref. 272, 57223) and Volta (Ghana)(Ref. 57223). Reports from the St. Paul (Ref. 3202) and lower Niger (Ref. 13331) unconfirmed (Ref. 57223).

Short description Morphology | Morphometrics

Dorsal spines (total): 1; Dorsal soft rays (total): 5-6; Anal spines: 0; Vertebrae: 31 - 32. Diagnosis: labial disk moderately developed and rounded, covered with large papillae; mandibular barbels little developed auxiliary barbels absent; premaxillary teeth large and arranged in 3-4 rows; mandibular teeth numbering 4+4 to 5+5, sometimes even 6+6; 6th soft ray of dorsal fin always slender, very close to 5th; adipose fin short, beginning slightly ahead of anal-fin origin; caudal peduncle rather elongate, but less so than in C. batesii; caudal fin deeply forked, with distinctly pointed lobes, lower lobe longer than upper; usually a longitudinal black band on one or both lobes of caudal fin; eyes moderately developed; sexual dimorphism absent or weak (Ref. 57223). Coloration: body with 3 more or less well defined dark vertical bars separated by paler areas; lower caudal-fin lobe, and sometimes also the upper, with a more or less distinct black band (Ref. 57223).
