Etymology: Sauvagella: Because of Sauvage, 1860-1880 and 1875-1891; ichtyologist that studied the Ogowe; author of "Histoire naturelle des poissons de Madagascar";  madagascariensis: Named for its type locality, Madagascar.

Short description Morphology | Morphometrics

Dorsal spines (total): 0; Dorsal soft rays (total): 13-16; Anal spines: 0; Anal soft rays: 17 - 19; Vertebrae: 41 - 43. Body a little compressed, belly rounded, without pre-pelvic scutes, but a pelvic scute present with slender vertical arms. Gill rakers probably few. Last two anal fin rays not separate from others (cf. Spratellomorpha bianalis). Distinguished from other non-scuted clupeids in area (Spratelloides, Dussumieria, Etrumeus) by presence of normal pelvic scute (cf. W-shaped) (Ref. 188). Body depth 15.8-21.1% SL. Snout 26.2-33.7% HL (Ref. 33664). Scales are cycloid and easily shed (Ref. 56161). Two color forms, yellow and red or orange, have been noted in Sauvagella madagascariensis (Ref. 56161).
