Comments: | Introduced for aquaculture in 1944 from Java by the Japanese government, however the attempt was unsuccessful. The species was accidentally introduced in 1946 by two soldiers named Wu Chen-Huei and Kuo Chi-Chang as souvenirs from Singapore which later became popular in Taiwan. The Taiwanese government monitor as well as regulate the dissemination of the tilapias, and there are no reported adverse effects of their introduction at present. Also Ref. 5731, 13364.
