Known from Johnston Atoll and Hawai'I Island to Kure Atoll, 1-42 m (ref. 58302). Known to be abundant in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, where it has been often observed in schools on seaward reefs or rocky substrata (Ref. 86689).
