Known from Sumatra, Java and Borneo (Ref. 36654). Introduced into Bali (Ref. 7050) and Lake Poso (Ref. 26747). Development of several captive strains of Trichogaster trichopterus have been carried out. The blue colored strains are commonly reported in the aquarium literature as originating from Sumatra but these have never been encountered across the whole range of this species (Ref. 56386).
