Occurs in Honshu, in Kawahara-oike Lake, Nagasaki (Ref. 32231). Also recorded from Lake Biwa (Ref. 78994). A hundred bioluminescent fish (a genetically modified fish - product of flourescent protein extracted from jellyfish and attaching to DNA in embryonic fish) has been imported from Taiwan for aquarium enthusiasts. A bill was passed in June regulating importation, sale and use of genetically altered organisms that could alter the ecosystem. When the law goes into effect in January 2004, firms will be required to submit documentation proving the modified organisms safe (Ref. 48570).
