Ranges from west coast to St. Lucia, Natal; abundant on the southwest Cape coast to Agulhas (Ref. 4393). Juveniles found in the Berg River to Kwelega, near East London (Ref. 4393). Commercially taken especially off beaches at Cape Agulhas, Strandfontein and St. Helena Bay (Ref. 12484). Commercial netting is controlled by permit from the Marine Development Branch (Ref. 12484). Salt dried, it is known as 'bokkom', which, when smoked, is a delicacy and traditional Cape fare (Ref. 12484). Angling record: 0.5 kg (Ref. 12484).
