Reported from Rio Negro, its type locality, in the Peruvian Amazon and Araguay (Ref. 35237). Occurs in the Amazon, Ucayali, Marañón (and adjoining lagoons) and Nanay Rivers; also in Lake Quistococha. Exported as an aquarium fish (Ref. 9235). Also Ref. 36377.
