Little external pigment on caudal peduncle before about 12 mm; larvae about 12-20 mm with clear band proximally, and clear patch which develops into a band distally on pectoral fins; pair of barbels form on mandible at about 9 mm; each is round to oval in cross-section, with a pigmented fringe developing along the posterior margin by about 18 mm. Notochord flexion occurs before hatching. Pigmentation: Larvae: heavy on trunk and tail, except little on caudal peduncle before about 12 mm; series along lateral midline of tail; up to 6 bars form during transformation; heavy on gut except little ventrally before about 11 mm; heavy on head except sparse ventrally and on snout; on dorsal fin base, extending onto anterior rays by about 11 mm and covering fin by about 18 mm; on most caudal fin rays, heavier ventrally; heavy on pelvic fins; primarily on upper half of pectoral fins, spreading ventrad to cover fin by 11 mm; clear band proximally on pectoral fins at about 12-20 mm, clear patch distally by about 12 mm, forms band by about 20 mm.
