Elongate, slender body; moderately narrow eye; first dorsal fin ray over myomere 21-22 (vs. myomere 19-20 in V. nimbaria; first anal fin ray opposite dorsal fin ray 9-10 (vs. opposite dorsal fin 10-11 in V. nimbaria); dorsolateral melanophore series on larvae less than about 4 mm; after 4 mm, usually a large melanophore ventrally near end of caudal peduncle; pigment on anal fin and caudal fin bases in postflexion stage. Pigmentation: Preflexion-postflexion: dorsolateral pigment migrates ventrad, disappears by about 4 mm; usually 1 at cleithrum after about 4 mm; 1 above end of hindgut; 1-3 on ventral margin of tail; 1-4 along anal fin base by about 7.5 mm; along bases of caudal fin rays by about 6-7 mm. Transformation: develops over gut, on dorsal surface of head, and internally below vertebral column in caudal peduncle. Sequence of fin development: caudal, dorsal, anal, pelvics, pectorals.
