Comments: Spawns only in a few streams in the Koke'e area on Kaua'i, since water temperatures in other areas are generally too high; needs cold, clean water and silt-free gravel beds for successful spawning; female builds the nest (or redd) by "rooting" in the gravel bottom with head and tail; spawns with two males usually present, one on either side; after completion of spawning, the female covers the nest with gravel (Ref. 44091)
