Environment:  reef-associated; marine; depth range 1 - 20 m
Distribution:  Western Pacific: Borneo to Vanuatu, north to the Yaeyama Islands, south to Rowley Shoals; Belau and Yap in Micronesia.
Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 0-0; Dorsal soft rays (total): 16-19. Description: Characterized by mainly blue or blue-grey color; top of snout and head with pale stripe; blackish caudal fin with orange base and white margin; 10 caudal rays; rings 14 - 16 + 13 - 15; discontinuous superior trunk and tail ridges; inferior trunk ridge ends near anal ring; lateral trunk ridge confluent with inferior tail ridge; length of snout 1.9-2.2 in head length; depth of snout 4.9-7.2 in snout length; head length 3.5-4.2 in SL (Ref. 90102).
Biology:  Inhabits mud and reef flats (Ref. 205); benthic (Ref. 75154). Solitary, in pairs or small groups in sea crevices or sheltering among sea urchin spines (Ref 90102). Ovoviviparous (Ref. 205). The male carries the eggs in a brood pouch which is found under the tail (Ref. 205).
