Environment:  reef-associated; marine; depth range 4 - 30 m, non-migratory
Distribution:  Western Pacific: Indonesia (Moluccas and Flores) and Philippines.
Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 11-13; Dorsal soft rays (total): 10-11; Anal spines: 2-2; Anal soft rays: 10-11. Description: Exhibits geographic color variations (Ref. 7247). Generally overall blue, scales with dark elongated streaks. Philippines variant has relatively thicker markings. Body depth 1.9-2.1 in SL (Ref. 90102).
Biology:  Adults inhabit coral-rich areas of sheltered lagoon and inshore coral reefs (Ref. 9710). Seen with similar yellow-tailed species, often on the same coral patches. Mostly found in aggregations on coastal reef slopes with low Acropora patches on sand to 30 m (Ref. 48636). Oviparous, distinct pairing during breeding (Ref. 205). Eggs are demersal and adhere to the substrate (Ref. 205). Males guard and aerate the eggs (Ref. 205). Diurnal species (Ref. 113699).

Threat to humans:  harmless
Country info:  Recorded in TaƱon Strait (Ref. 107276) and Bantayan Is. in northern Cebu (Ref. 114734). Known from Negros, Balicasag Island, Calamianes Islands, and Palawan. However this may be a separate species based on prelimanry genetic data (Ref. 90102). Also Ref. 7247, 59110.
