Family:  Ophichthidae (Snake eels), subfamily: Ophichthinae
Max. size:  53 cm TL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  demersal; freshwater; brackish; marine
Distribution:  Western Indian Ocean: Red Sea south to Natal, South Africa. Also reported from Mauritius and Reunion (Ref. 33390).
Diagnosis:  Vertebrae: 167-174. Olive brown above, dusky on head, lighter below (Ref. 3972).
Biology:  Found in estuaries. Enters freshwater (Ref. 13246).
