Family:  Macrouridae (Grenadiers or rattails)
Max. size:  25 cm TL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  bathypelagic; marine; depth range 1000 - 1500 m, non-migratory
Distribution:  Western Central Atlantic: Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea. One record from Hudson Canyon.
Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 0-0; Anal spines: 0-0. Snout short, blunt; eyes large, its diameter greater than snout length. Pyloric caeca about 9, short, stumpy (Ref. 1371). Band of small pointed teeth in the premaxilla and dentary. Head fully scaled except for underside of snout, gular and branchiostegal membranes. Body dark brown to black, buccal cavity, gill cavities and peritoneum black (Ref. 37108).
Biology:  Closely related to S. hirundo (eastern Atlantic) and S. pumiliceps (Indian Ocean). A more thorough study using adequate numbers of specimens should be done to distinguish the three.
